๐Ÿ’ก Not sure who your insurer is? Check the insurance sticker on your windshield or your vehicle registration documents.
1
๐Ÿ›‘ Step 1: Stop Immediately & Stay Calm
โ–ถ
  • Stop immediately โ€” Never flee! Hit-and-run carries severe penalties.
  • Turn on hazard lights to warn approaching vehicles.
  • Take a deep breath and stay calm โ€” panic only makes things worse.
  • Check yourself and passengers for injuries first.
โš ๏ธ NEVER: fight with others, flee the scene, or move injured persons unnecessarily.
2
๐Ÿ†˜ Step 2: Secure the Scene & Set Up Warning Signs
โ–ถ
  • Place warning triangles 50-150 meters behind your vehicle.
  • Highway: place triangles at least 150 meters (200m+ at night/rain/fog).
  • Move everyone to a safe area (behind guardrails on highways). Never stay in traffic lanes.
  • Take multiple photos of the scene from different angles.
โš ๏ธ On highways, evacuate to the area behind the guardrail immediately. Do NOT stay on the road arguing!
3
๐Ÿ‘€ Step 3: Check for Injuries & Call Emergency
โ–ถ
  • Check all occupants in both vehicles for injuries.
  • Anyone injured โ†’ Call 911 immediately.
  • While waiting: do NOT move the injured person (unless in immediate danger like fire).
  • If trained, apply pressure to bleeding wounds and keep the person warm.
๐Ÿš‘ Golden rule: Don't move, don't give water, don't medicate. Wait for trained responders.
4
๐Ÿ“ธ Step 4: Document the Scene (Photos/Video)
โ–ถ

Document the scene thoroughly when safe to do so:

  • Wide shots: front and rear views showing vehicle positions, lane markings, traffic signs.
  • Close-ups: impact points and damage details.
  • Detail shots: skid marks, debris, road conditions, traffic light status.
  • Other vehicle: license plate, make, model, color.
  • Documents: other driver's license and registration (with permission or when police arrive).
  • Dashcam: save footage immediately, don't let it be overwritten.
๐Ÿ’ก Include landmarks (street signs, mile markers, buildings) in photos to help police locate the scene.
5
๐Ÿค Step 5: Exchange Information
โ–ถ
  • Exchange the following (stay rational, don't argue):
  • ๐Ÿ“› Names and phone numbers
  • ๐Ÿš™ License plates, vehicle make/model/color
  • ๐Ÿ“„ Driver's license & registration info
  • ๐Ÿข Insurance company name & policy number
  • ๐Ÿ“ Exact time and location of the accident
โš ๏ธ Avoid settling for cash on the spot unless it's a minor scrape with clear fault and both agree.
๐Ÿ‘‰ See the โœ๏ธ When Can You Settle Privately? section below for the right way.
6
๐Ÿ‘ฎ Step 6: Call Police & Wait for Officers
โ–ถ
  • Dial 911 (or the local police number).
  • Tell the dispatcher: location, vehicles involved, injuries, whether tow truck needed.
  • Before officers arrive: protect the scene, don't move vehicles (unless blocking traffic and already photographed).
  • When police arrive: explain what happened, show license, registration, insurance.
  • Review the accident report carefully before signing.
โš ๏ธ If you disagree with the report, mark "contested" before signing. Never sign something you don't agree with.
7
๐Ÿ“ž Step 7: Contact Your Insurance Company
โ–ถ
  • Report the accident within 48 hours (sooner is better).
  • Have ready: policy number, accident time/location, other party info, police report number.
  • Insurance will send an adjuster or guide you to an approved repair shop.
  • Keep all repair invoices and itemized lists for reimbursement.
  • Ask about rental car or towing coverage if needed.
๐Ÿ’ก Check your insurance validity date on the dashboard before leaving the scene.
8
๐Ÿ“‹ Step 8: Follow-up & Important Notes
โ–ถ

After the dust settles:

  • ๐Ÿ”ง Vehicle repair: choose a reputable shop, keep all records.
  • ๐Ÿ“‘ Claim follow-up: track your insurance claim progress.
  • ๐Ÿ“ž Keep contacts: save the other party and police officer's contact info.
  • ๐Ÿ“… Traffic violations: if the accident caused citations, provide the police report to clear them.
  • ๐Ÿง˜ Mental health: anxiety after an accident is normal. Talk to someone if needed.
  • ๐Ÿ”„ Learn from it: reflect on what happened and how to prevent it in the future.
โš ๏ธ Accidents involving injuries may lead to claims, mediation, or lawsuits. Consider consulting an attorney.

โœ๏ธ When Can You Settle Privately? Proper "็งไบ†" Guide

โ–ถ

Private settlement means handling a minor accident without calling the police. It saves time, but all conditions below must be met or you must call the police.

โœ… When Private Settlement Is OK (ALL required)

  • ๐Ÿšซ No injuries whatsoever โ€” This is the #1 rule!
  • ๐Ÿ›ป Only minor property damage (typically under $1,000-$1,500)
  • ๐Ÿ‘ฎ Both parties agree on fault โ€” clear liability, no dispute
  • ๐Ÿ“„ Both drivers have valid licenses, registration, and insurance
  • ๐Ÿบ Neither driver is under the influence of alcohol or drugs
  • ๐Ÿ—๏ธ No damage to public property (guardrails, signs, streetlights)
  • ๐Ÿค Both parties voluntarily agree to settle privately

โŒ NEVER Settle Privately If

  • ๐Ÿš‘ Anyone is injured (including claims of pain or dizziness)
  • ๐Ÿ’€ Anyone is killed
  • ๐Ÿบ The other driver seems drunk, high, or has no license
  • ๐Ÿƒ The other car has no plates, fake plates, or tries to flee
  • ๐Ÿ—๏ธ Public property was damaged
  • ๐Ÿ’ฐ The other party demands an unreasonable amount or threatens you
  • โ“ Fault is unclear or both parties disagree
  • ๐Ÿš— A commercial vehicle is involved (taxi, rideshare โ€” they may claim lost income)

๐Ÿ“ Proper Private Settlement Process

1
Document the scene โ€” Take wide, close-up, and detail photos (see Step 4 in this guide)
2
Move vehicles โ€” Pull over to the side to avoid blocking traffic
3
Check documents โ€” Verify both driver's licenses, registrations, and insurance cards
4
Sign an agreement โ€” Write down: date, time, location, both parties' info, fault assignment, and settlement amount. Both sign. Search "private car accident settlement agreement template" online for a standard form.
5
Pay & get receipt โ€” Use digital payment (Venmo, Zelle, PayPal) for a record. Get a signed receipt acknowledging payment received.
6
Part ways โ€” Keep photos of the signed agreement and payment record. Once signed, the matter is generally resolved and cannot be reopened.

โš ๏ธ Common Private Settlement Scams

  • "Pay first, repair later" trick โ€” They take cash and disappear or claim more later. Always sign first, then pay!
  • "I'm fine, don't call an ambulance" โ€” They claim injury hours later. If anyone shows any sign of injury, call 911.
  • "I know a cop" intimidation โ€” They claim connections to pressure you into paying more. Don't fall for it; call the police.
  • Inflated repair quotes โ€” Have a rough idea of repair costs before agreeing to an amount.
๐Ÿ’ก Golden rule: When in doubt, call 911. It's never a mistake to report an accident, but a bad private settlement can cost you dearly.
